Birth injuries abound as the rate of c-section births increase

Injuries to a newborn during the birth process are perhaps some of the most traumatic types of injuries. As Oregon parents await the arrival of their baby, most never contemplate the possibility that birth injuries may occur. Many of these injuries are caused by the negligence of medical staff during birth.

Birth injuries can happen as a result of the use of forceps during the birth process. They may also occur as a result of a lack of oxygen to a fetus whose medical team fails to note signs of distress. Although not as common, birth injuries can also happen during cesarean sections. Fetal lacerations can result when a surgeon cuts too deep with a scalpel. While many lacerations heal over time, a small percent of fetal lacerations that are deeper can cause serious injuries. Fingers may accidentally be amputated or a laceration may be deep enough to leave a scar.

C-sections are the most common surgery in the country. Nearly 33% of births result in c-sections. The high number of c-sections performed makes it important for parents to be aware of the dangers of malpractice and their legal rights should an incident occur.

Birth injuries caused by the malpractice of a doctor or hospital staff member can give rise to a medical malpractice claim. Preventable errors during the birth process can leave a child with permanent disabilities. A medical malpractice claim is a way to hold negligent healthcare workers responsible for their mistakes. A lawsuit can also help a family recover compensation for the injuries suffered by their child. An experienced Oregon medical malpractice attorney can assist victims in evaluating a potential claim and maximizing the amount of recovery.
