A delay in breast cancer diagnosis can impact prognosis

On Behalf of Law Office of Robert A. Miller | Jul 5, 2023 | Failure To Diagnose

When you are sick, you go to the doctor expecting that you will receive quality care that meets a certain standard. After explaining your symptoms, running tests and seeking answers, you depend on your doctor to provide you with an accurate diagnosis of what your illness could be. If you are seriously ill, a prompt and accurate diagnosis is critical. Unfortunately, a proper diagnosis does not always happen in a timely manner, and it can negatively impact a California patient’s health.

Getting answers and timely treatment is especially important in cases involving cancer. Depending on the type of cancer, it can progress rapidly, and a worsening of the disease can impact the efficacy of any treatment prescribed. If you experienced a delay in diagnosis, it could affect your prognosis and your long-term well-being.

Fast diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial

There are different reasons why you may not get a cancer diagnosis as fast as you might assume you should. Sometimes, there are legitimate reasons that this can take a long time, such as careful analysis of tissue or development of an in-depth treatment plan. Ultimately, this could lead to better and more effective treatment. However, delays due to mistakes, misread test results, lack of patient concern and other preventable factors are inexcusable. Each cancer patient is different, and even a slight delay can lead to a spread of the disease.

The faster a patient receives a cancer diagnosis, the faster he or she could have surgery to remove cancerous tissue or start treatment. Depending on the type of cancer the patient has, fast action may be critical to survival. Typically, most doctors recommend that chemotherapy begin within four months of the initial surgical procedure. This is why it is critical for doctors to listen carefully to their patients, doing diagnosis tests to find answers regarding ongoing health concerns.

Are you a victim of poor-quality medical care?

If you are the victim of medical care that did not meet certain standards, you do not need to remain silent about your experience. It is possible that you could have grounds to pursue legal action against the responsible parties. Medical mistakes, delayed diagnosis and other factors could be a valid reason to seek justice through a civil claim — a step that will allow you to fight for appropriate compensation.
