How to tell if a doctor failed to monitor fetal distress

On Behalf of Law Office of Robert A. Miller | May 27, 2025 | Pregnancy-Related Injuries

Doctors must closely monitor the health of both the mother and baby throughout the pregnancy. When they fail to recognize or respond to fetal distress, the results can lead to serious injuries.

Families may hold medical professionals accountable if this failure causes harm. Understanding the signs of medical negligence during pregnancy can help identify whether poor fetal monitoring caused the injury.

What is fetal distress?

Fetal distress usually means the baby is not getting enough oxygen. This can happen during labor or in the later stages of pregnancy. Signs may include an abnormal heart rate, decreased fetal movement or problems with the placenta. Medical professionals use fetal monitors to track the baby’s heart rate and contractions. They must react quickly if the baby shows signs of distress.

How can a doctor fail to monitor fetal distress?

A failure may happen if the doctor ignores abnormal heart rate patterns or delays action when signs appear. Nurses and doctors must check the monitor often and note any concerning changes. They must know when to order emergency interventions like a cesarean section. Failure to do these things can place both the mother and baby in danger.

What signs point to a failure to monitor distress?

If the mother experiences a long labor without intervention or a delayed C-section, it can be a sign that the doctor failed to monitor distress or that there was poor use of monitoring equipment. If the baby is born with brain damage, oxygen loss or seizures, these may also point to missed warning signs. A mother may also suffer injuries if complications from distress cause heavy bleeding or the need for emergency surgery.

To determine if a pregnancy-related injury happened because of poor monitoring, it is important to point to records from the labor and delivery process. These records show what the monitors displayed and how staff responded. Recognizing the signs of poor monitoring helps determine whether medical negligence caused the injury.
