Can failure to manage gestational diabetes cause injuries?

On Behalf of Law Office of Robert A. Miller | Oct 23, 2025 | Birth Injuries

Gestational diabetes affects how your body processes sugar during pregnancy. When it goes untreated or poorly managed, it can create serious risks for both mother and baby. Understanding how this condition affects pregnancy helps you recognize why careful monitoring and treatment are essential.

Understanding gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes develops when hormones from the placenta interfere with your body’s ability to use insulin properly. As a result, your blood sugar levels rise. This condition usually appears in the second or third trimester and often goes away after childbirth. However, without proper care, it can lead to dangerous complications during and after pregnancy.

How unmanaged diabetes affects your baby

High blood sugar levels can cause your baby to grow larger than normal, a condition called macrosomia. This increases the chance of a difficult delivery or the need for a C-section. Babies born to mothers with untreated gestational diabetes may also experience low blood sugar shortly after birth or face a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. These problems can be minimized when doctors regularly check glucose levels and adjust treatment plans.

Risks to the mother

When gestational diabetes is not properly managed, the mother faces serious health concerns. Uncontrolled blood sugar can lead to high blood pressure, preeclampsia, or excessive amniotic fluid. These conditions raise the likelihood of premature birth or delivery complications. Routine monitoring and communication between you and your medical team are key to reducing these risks.

When medical errors cause harm

If a healthcare provider fails to test for or respond appropriately to gestational diabetes, preventable injuries can occur. This might include not ordering glucose tolerance tests, ignoring abnormal results, or failing to provide dietary and medication guidance. When these oversights result in harm to you or your baby, they may be considered medical negligence under Oregon law.

Proper management of gestational diabetes includes regular testing, medical follow-up, and clear care instructions. If you experience symptoms like unusual thirst, fatigue, or blurred vision, it’s important to raise those concerns with your doctor. Early detection and careful treatment can make all the difference for both you and your child.
